Ultrafast GC

The rapid, high resolution separations achieved using ultrafast GC leverage a combination of physical factors common to gas chromatography including: 


  • Decreasing column length 

  • Increasing carrier linear velocity

  • Decreasing column ID 

  • Decrease phase film thickness 

  • Using more diffusive carrier gas - hydrogen

  • Decreasing retention factor by increasing column heating rate.

Of these, the ability to significantly increase the rate that a column can be heated over what is possible using a conventional air oven GC, is by far the most significant and enables run times to be reduced from minutes to seconds with little loss in component peak resolution. This rapid temperature ramp rate is achieved with the 720GC by directly (resistively) heating the low thermal mass capillary columns it uses thereby eliminating the requirement for a thermally and energy inefficent column oven.

High Pressure Mass Spectrometry

Conventional quadrapole and time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometers require continuous high vacuum and minimum path lengths to operate effectively. Three dimensional ion trap mass spectrometers use a different mechanism that does not need significant path length to function. The HPMS used with the 720GC takes advantage of this, designed to be 1000 times smaller than conventional ion traps, it requireds a vacuum of only 1-10 Torr to operate. ... all contained within  a 1" x 1" x 1" user replaceable compact core. The HPMS can achieve sub-parts-per-million sensitivity with a mass range of 50-450 m/z. This detector provides users with the ability to identify and quantify specific components in complex mixtures and can be used alongside onboard FID or TCD.

Operator Centric Software

The 720Test software suite has been designed by users. This operator centric application has a streamlined workflow that eliminates the complexity associated with conventional chromatography and mass spec software. 720test software provides users with

The Acquire and Process user interfaces contain only the graphical elements needed to accomplish tasks like running  a sample sequence , viewing system control settings or reviewing or re-processing data files to generate results. The SQL all-in-one data file format contains all the metadata associated with each sample being run - the system control method, user added variable like batch no., sample, no., customer name etc., all acquired raw data points from each detector,  integrated and calibrated results data as well as the results report. All detector channels, including the FID, TCD, HPMS Total Ion Current (TIC) and up to 16 Selected Ion Mode (SIM) traces are integrated, calibrated and reported using the same procedure greatly simpliyfing operation. Similarly, quantitative calibrations can be set up across channels i.e. a single calibration section which can contain components from any detector or SIM channel allowing an operator to set up one calibration for each method instead of having to make one for each data channel. Customizable results report templates enable users to decide what they want to see being reported or exported.
